Choosing the right plants for your GreenWall® - Holman Industries

Choosing plants for your GreenWall® depends a lot on your environment and your desired location.

Once you’ve decided where your wall is going to be located, pick plants for your GreenWall based on how much sun and shade it receives. We recommend installing your GreenWall on a North or West facing wall as they generally receive the most light and heat. Grasses, succulents and small perennial shrubs will thrive in a contained space.

GROWING IN FULL/PART SUN

Part sun is usually classified as ‘morning sun’ or ‘afternoon sun’ (3-5 hours). A morning sun position is favourable for most herbs and vegetables as it is milder than hot afternoon sun. A part sun position can also extend the life of some of your plants as constant full sun exposure can cause them to bolt and flower prematurely.

Some herbs and veggies that are able to grow in full sun include Rosemary, Oregano, Dill, Chilli, Spinach and Kale. Plus many more!

GROWING IN LOW LIGHT

Most herbs like a full sun position (6+ hours of full sun) but there is a handful of herbs that will happily grow in a mostly shaded position. At least 2-3 hours of sun is still required for these herbs to grow. It is important to not over water plants growing in mostly shaded spots as the lack of sun exposure and heat from direct sun will mean water remains in the soil for longer. Over watering will lead to root and stem rot.

Some plants for your GreenWall that will happily grow in shady spots include Parsley, Mint, Thyme and Chives.

Ferns are a great option for year round growth. They are both hardy enough to withstand cold winters and warm summers. They do however, prefer rich soil with an abundance of organic matter. We love seeing ferns on our Vertical Planting Kits!

Devil’s Ivy (bottom right) are a must have for any starter gardener or your first GreenWall. They are tolerant to very low light areas but will grow quicker in well lit spaces. A great element for any hanging GreenWall!

Donkey’s Tail are a favourite of ours, include a few or create a whole feature wall like we have at Holman HQ! These are great if you want to plant and forget. However, be gentle as the beaded stems are rather fragile.
