Before storing equipment you won't be using for a while, it's crucial to give them a thorough end-of-season clean and tidy to ensure they last. 🌈 Take apart and deep clean pruners, loppers, and shears at least once each season
🌈 To prevent rust, make sure your tools are completely dry before storing them
🌈 For tools with wooden handles, inspect for any cracks or weaknesses and address them before they become a problem. Now's the perfect time to lightly sand and apply linseed oil to condition the handles if needed

While gardening can be great for our mental health, if we don't exercise the proper precautions, it can cause strain on our physical health. To protect yourself while moving and lifting heavy items in the garden, we recommend: ❇️ If possible, getting someone else to help you. And before you do whatever you do, warm up with some light stretching
❇️ When lifting off the floor, keep your back straight and bend at the knees. You want to avoid bending your back as much as possible
❇️ Above all, looking for other ways to transport heavy items. We like using a beach trolley to move heavy bins, pot plants and other gear around the garden

Soil, mulch and bagged potting mixes are living products, both full of microbes that keep our plants healthy. But some of them can be unhealthy for us.
It’s a good idea to wear face masks and gloves when handling bagged potting mix, to minimise the risk of lung diseases. Here are other easy ways to protect yourself:
🌱 Store potting mix in a cool area away from direct sunlight to reduce bacterial growth
🌱 Wash your hands after handling potting mix or soil, and especially before eating or drinking!
🌱 Wear a well-fitting disposable mask so that any dust is filtered out before you breathe it in
🌱 Make sure the working area is well ventilated if you are in a glasshouse, potting shed, or indoors

After you slip, slop, slap, here are some things you can do to protect them and help them survive the heat ☀️ ⛱️ Install a shade cloth or an umbrella to keep plants cool. Fruit is especially susceptible to sunburn if not protected. 💦 Consider installing irrigation. Hoses and watering cans are ideal for small balcony gardens, pot plants and targeting specific areas, but for those with larger spaces or lots of plants, a black poly pipe with drippers is very effective. This will help maximise water efficiency and minimise run-off and evaporation. 🪴 Apply mulch to your garden beds and pots as it keeps the soil cool and reduces moisture loss. Organic mulches are great because they add organic matter to the soil as they break down. #BEASAFEGARDENER

It's a new moon tonight! 🌑 Whether you believe in the ancient agricultural practise of moon planting or not, many gardeners swear by it, and believe moon planting to significantly improve the flavour of fruits and vegetables. Despite what the name suggests, moon planting doesn't mean you're out in the garden at midnight by the light of the moon. Instead, it's about aligning your gardening activities with the moon's phases. Just as the gravitational pull of the Sun, Moon, and Earth influences the tides, it also impacts plants. There are two key reasons why moon gardening is believed to be effective: the gravitational forces that affect moisture levels in the soil, water table, and plants themselves, and the moonlight that encourages plant growth. Whether you believe in the hype or not, here's everything you need to know during the New Moon phase: A new moon is a waxing one which means there is increasing moonlight, greatest sap flow, and this is also when gravity pulls water up which causes seeds to swell up and burst. These factors combine to create the ideal time for sowing or transplanting above ground leafy annuals i.e. lettuce, spinach, cabbage 🥬🌾
