With two long weekends coming up, now is the perfect opportunity to tick off a few simple home improvement jobs you’ve been putting off. Whether you’re looking to freshen up your space, improve your outdoor areas, or just keep busy over the break, we’ve rounded up some easy DIY projects you can tackle in a day (or less!). Read on for quick wins that’ll have your home looking and feeling refreshed this autumn.
1. START A GREENWALL
Feature walls aren’t exclusive to interior walls; turn any exterior wall into a feature wall with our variety of GreenWalls®. Whether you want to start growing vegetables, herbs or flowers, our range of GreenWalls can be displayed on vertical surfaces around the home, on balconies or in courtyards.
Before starting your project consider the amount of sun your area receives. If you have eaves or a veranda, check how the sun exposure changes during the day making sure the wall you want to mount on still receives enough sun. Full sun (5+ hours) to part sun (3+ hours) gives you a lot of variety of plants to choose from. If you experience very hot summers, a mild morning sun position is preferable to a hot afternoon sun position. Also consider where your water source will be and how easily you can run a hose from that tap.
As for selecting the plants you put in your GreenWall®, make sure you group your plants by their sun and watering requirements. For example, you don’t want to plant sun-loving and drought-tolerant succulents with shade and moisture-loving ferns in the same GreenWall.
HANDY TIP: If you are going to grow a mixture of plants in your GreenWall then it is worth noting that the top row is best for taller growing plants as their natural vertical habit of growth won’t be inhibited. For the rows beneath, it’s better to choose plants with a trailing growth habit so these can get out from under the top pots to get access to sunlight.
2. SET UP GARDEN LIGHTING
Garden lighting benefits almost every household due to its range of purposes. Especially as we head into the cooler months when it starts getting darker earlier, if you are interested in improving your garden’s security, safety, usability or beautification, then there is a lighting situation for you.
For a traditional garden feeling that is cosy and inviting, Warm White lighting is best for visibility and adding warmth to architectural elements. Start with a Warm White Wi-Fi Garden Light Controller. Wi-Fi connectivity through Holman Home allows you to create lighting schedules with smart automation. We recommend hooking up a maximum of 60W of garden lights to a controller to ensure your lights are looking their best. The cable system is DIY-friendly and fully expandable with 2-Pin cables.
To give your garden and outdoor space a modern look with an abundance of colour, RGB lighting is perfect to achieve cooler colour tones and showcase the natural beauty of your plants and greenery. Why not try hanging RGB Tree lights on trees or trellises? Stick to cool tones and cast your own moonlight. This technique is referred to as downlighting and adds texture and character to your garden’s natural elements. Or make use of reflective surfaces to disperse light. Bathe a painted wall area in your team’s colours using RGB spotlights. Make it completely your own!
ONE THING TO NOTE: It is possible to create white light with RGB lighting—however, the result will look more ‘bright white’ than ‘warm white’. For a true ‘warm white’ effect, please select the Warm White Wi-Fi Garden Light Controller and the 2-pin Warm White lights.
3. OR DECK LIGHTING
If you want to take your garden lighting set up even further, our deck lights can be used to light steps and elevated spaces in your garden or patio, and they can also be positioned in ceilings and along hand rails! Our Plug + Socket System allows you to set up and install all of the lights yourself, by simply daisy-chaining each light together from the main controller. We have some handy blogs on how to set up your own garden lights here! Our deck lights are available in three sizes and two colourways, RGB and Warm White.
4. WATCH THE WEATHER ROLL IN
With the changing of the seasons, you can never be entirely sure how long autumn will last, whether spring will come earlier or later, or even when you’re going to get a random bout of rain. And all these changes can affect how our plants grow, flower, and even when produce is ready to pick. A weather station is the quickest way to learn about the climate in your own garden and can elevate how you garden with 12 weather data points available.
